So, I have really oily skin but lately, my skin has been feeling dry even though the heat and humidity here in Abuja has been quite high. Neither of my “go to” summer oils (olive and coconut oils) are solving this problem for me. Not wanting to resort to shea butter (it’s very thick consistency can be quite heavy for the summers here) and, not wanting to use commercial cremes, I decided to get mixing.
The result, a hydrating face mask. This mask is moisturizing and plumps up the skin. it minimizes pores and brightens the face. You need a maximum of 3 simple ingredients:
1. Honey 1/2 teaspoon
2. Turmeric 1/4 teaspoon
3. Vegetable Glycerine 1/4 teaspoon
Mix all the ingredients together (I mix them on my palm, stirring with my forefinger). Once ingredients are thoroughly mixed, dampen your face and neck and apply the mask avoiding the eye area. You can leave the mask on for as long as you like. For maximum results, leave on for at least 20-30 minutes. I usually do this mask in the evenings after a long day at work or in the morning on weekends. When I have the time, I like to leave the mask on for at least an hour. The longest I’ve gone is 3 hours. Some people experience tanning from the honey (mostly if you are light skinned). If that’s the case for you, then use only glycerine and turmeric with a dash of lime juice for its cleansing properties.
Glycerine: Glycerine helps retain skin water. It is a humectant that keeps your skin moist and plump. It heals burns and scars. It is gentle and acts as a great skin moisturiser.
Honey: Is also a humectant and moisturizer. It is antimicrobial meaning it has both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that help in treating acne and other skin conditions. It adds a natural glow to the skin.
Turmeric: Turmeric has a wide range of uses from topical to internal . It is used to reduce signs of aging. It reduces inflammation and heals skin. It can be used to exfoliate the skin.
When you put on the mask, you will feel your face heat up slightly. This is normal, the properties of the mask are getting to work.
