So You Want Beautiful, Radiant Skin?… Don’t We All!

The first rule in achieving beautiful skin is consistency and patience.

Some remedies give instant results while others take a while to really show.

Say, for example your goal is to maintain a youthful skin or get rid of acne, you should have a skin care regiment you follow consistently that will help you achieve and maintain this. Just ask ladies in their 60’s for their secret to healthy, youthful skin and they’ll most likely list “consistent skin care routine” as part of their healthy skin habits. Now for those with already perfect skin and good genes, you might think you don’t need any form of skin care. You’re wrong! You still need to take care of yourself and maintain your radiance and youthfulness as there are so many factors that can accelerate the aging process. Think of your skin care as you would a healthy lifestyle. It’s best to approach it as a “long term management” rather than a bunch of instant fixes (which can also work for specific beauty problems but not exactly what we are aiming for). It’s like trying to loose weight. Incorporating healthy food choices and lifestyle will help you loose the weight and keep it off in the long run. Likewise, a healthy skincare routine will help you achieve healthier, younger looking skin and keep it that way through the years.

Stress , Pollution, Sun Damage and Lack of sleep are some factors that can affect the health of your skin negatively.

STRESS due to work, relationships, financial problems lead to dull, tired looking skin. Yoga, Exercise, or perhaps confronting the issues head on are ways you can minimize it. Getting  a financial plan suitable to your needs and goals can help reduce your financial stress. Walking is another great way of reducing stress. It not only improves your mood and reduces your risks of disease, it also improves circulation which will result in better blood flow to your skin leading to a glowing radiant skin (trust me ladies, this works!). POLLUTION has been creeping on us slowly. If you live in the city you know life can be fast paced and very hectic. We are all busy trying to complete our To-Do lists, it seems like there are never enough hours in the day. It’s not uncommon to come home at the end of the day your skin feeling grimy, tired and/or caked up, and sometimes even shades darker than your normal skin color (Nigerian sisters you know what I mean). Pollution in the cities can cause much harm to skin. Smog, dust, and other nasty stuff floating around in the air turn into free radicals that attack skin cells and damage DNA which in turn, causes skin to dry and age prematurely. Excessive exposure to sun can also wreak havoc on skin. It’s always advisable to protect your skin when out in the sun. Always wear a good sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher (regardless of your ethnicity) before you step out into the sun. You can also wear a hat with a wide brim to protect you.

SLEEP or rather, lack of it is another factor that can take a toll on your skin.  If you don’t get enough sleep at night, it can show on your face in the form of dull skin and tired eyes (that’s besides yawning every 2 seconds and walking around like a zombie). Your skin needs adequate sleep to be at its best and usually, 7-8 hours of sleep at night is advised. This is because the skin uses this time to rejuvenate as skin regenerates faster when you are asleep and adequate sleep equals younger looking skin. Depriving your skin of much needed sleep leads to premature aging. It’s never too late to start an “early to bed” routine, your skin will thank you for it!

Drink Up Ladies!

Hydration… Hydration… Hydration!  Water is your skin’s best friend. Your cells are made up of water and can become dry, flaky and wrinkly when you don’t take in enough. Water eliminates the toxins in your body and  improves the elasticity of your skin. Some people just don’t like the taste of water and if you’re one of them, try squeezing some lemon or adding honey to improve the taste. It is recommended that you take 8 glasses of water a day. So what are you waiting for? Start drinking your way to  a radiant, healthy, youthful you!

Vitamin C

CitrusVitamin C is both anti acne and anti aging. It protects the skin from sun damage and helps in the formation of collagen. Collagen is VERY important in maintaining youthfulness, suppleness and elasticity of your skin.Reduction in collagen leads to wrinkles and aging.

Two ways to use vitamin C to achieve healthy skin is by consuming internally (think citrus fruits and foods that are high in vitamin C) or, by applying topically. Lemons, Lime and Oranges are excellent sources of vitamin C. You can do a lemon facial treatment once or twice a week. Although lemons and lime instantly brighten you skin as they are skin lighteners, they can however increase your sensitivity to the sun. You may want to limit the frequency with which you apply lemons if you start to develop sun sensitivity or if you have sensitive skin in general. Without further ado, here are some D.I.Y recipes for you to try out.

D.I.Y RECIPES

CITRUS MASK

Ingredients:

1 lemon or lime

Method: take a slice of lemon or lime and rub all over your face and neck avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10mins or until completely dry. Once dry, you can rinse it off with cold or warm water. This will brighten your skin instantly and tighten your pores.

LEMON HONEY MASK

Ingredients:

A teaspoon of lemon/lime juice

A teaspoon of honey

Method: Mix both ingredients together thoroughly. Wet your face and spread mixture on to your face and neck avoiding your eye area. Leave on for 15mins or till it’s completely dry. Note your face will be slightly sticky from the honey. You can proceed to rinse off once it is dry. Your skin will feel refreshed once you’re done. The lemon/lime will cleanse your skin and tighten your pores while the honey will moisturize your skin leaving it feeling soft.

LEMON SUGAR SCRUB

Ingredients:

1 spoon of sugar

1/2 teaspoon of lemon or lime

1/2 teaspoon of honey

Method: Mix sugar, lemon and honey together in a bowl. Wet your face and rub the mixture on to your face and scrub for a few minutes. Allow to dry on your skin then rinse off. This will leave you with soft skin. The sugar will exfoliate dead skin cells revealing a brighter complexion while the lemon and honey will cleanse and soften your skin. Note that if you have sensitive, dry or thin skin then you should reduce the intensity of scrubbing or substitute the sugar for oats which is milder (oats is excellent for sensitive skin).

I’ve had really good results from all three recipes but keep in mind results vary for different people as skin types are different. As with all beauty products, it is advisable to always do a test patch to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
